Caught

I move through the tunnels, each step calculated and silent. The darkness wraps around me, but my enhanced vision pierces through it. The scents of the sewer fill my nostrils.

Decay, mold, and something else. Something unnatural.

My ears prick up at the faint sound of buzzing from behind me. My heart pounds faster. I quicken my pace, every muscle tensed for action. I can’t afford to get caught again.

A sharp screech echoes through the tunnels, sending a jolt of fear through me. They're onto me.

I push myself harder, moving faster through the labyrinthine passageways. My paws make almost no sound on the damp concrete. But then I feel it.

A stickiness under my paw.

I lift it slowly and look down.

Red resin.

I’ve been caught.

The resin spreads out beneath me, its crimson sheen glistening ominously in the dim light. Tiny filaments stretch from it, seeking purchase on my fur and skin. I yank my paw free with a quick jerk, but it's too late. The resin clings to me like a living thing.

The buzzing grows louder behind me, closer.

I have nowhere to run! I need to fight!

Three drones rush me, their obsidian carapaces gleaming wetly in the dim light. Their red eyes lock onto me with mechanical precision, pulsing in perfect unison.

My muscles tense as they form a perfect triangle formation, advancing with synchronized steps.

I bare my teeth, feeling venom pool behind my fangs.

No more running.

I plant my paws firmly on the damp concrete, ignoring the pull of the resin. If they want me, they'll have to fight for it.

The lead drone screeches, a sound like metal scraping against glass. The others respond in kind, their crimson eyes flashing.

I hiss through clenched teeth.

The drones pause, their antennae twitching as if surprised by my defiance. Then they surge forward as one.

I don't wait for them to reach me. I push off from the ground, launching myself directly at the lead drone. The world slows around me as my combat senses sharpen.

[Skill Activated: Nimble Landing]

I twist in mid-air, avoiding the drone's snapping jaws. My jaws open wide as I land directly on its head. My teeth puncture its hard carapace with a satisfying crack.

[Critical Hit!]

[Skill Activated: Toxic Bite]

Venom floods from my fangs into the drone's body. It thrashes beneath me, its limbs jerking spasmodically as my toxin attacks its system. The fractal runes etched across its shell pulse erratically, then dim.

[Enemy Defeated: Hivemind Drone]

I have no time to celebrate. The second drone lunges for my exposed back, mandibles clicking with deadly intent. I feel the displacement of air as it strikes.

[Danger Detected: Rear Attack]

I roll to the side, feeling the drone's mandibles clip a few strands of fur from my back. The miss throws it off balance, leaving its underside exposed for a precious second.

I seize the opportunity, slashing upward with my claws.

My claws rake across the drone's underside, finding the seam between carapace plates. The shell parts under my attack, revealing softer tissue beneath. Ichor leaks from the wound as the drone emits a high-pitched whine.
